Mounting an Air Rifle Scope on an RWS Rifle using a Lock Down Mount

How to Mount a Scope on an RWS Rifle using the Lock Down Mount

Follow these simple directions to mount a scope on an RWS Air Rifle with the Lock Down Mount or watch the video below >>. This mount will ensure zero movement when mounted properly on a spring piston powered air rifle.

  • First, make sure your air rifle is unloaded and not in the cocked position.
  • Secure your rifle in a rifle rest. If one is not available, you can use sand bags, rifle bags, or a padded vise. It needs to be secure, but still able to rotate left to right in order to level it.
  • On an RWS Rifle remove the slotted screw at the rear of the scope rail.
  • Take the top caps off of the RWS Lock Down Mount. The arrow marked on the mount should face toward the muzzle. There are two threaded set screws that fit into the recesses of the RWS's scope rail. Make sure the set screws protrude out of the bottom of the mount by about 1/16-inch.
  • Lay the mount on the rail with the arrow facing the muzzle. Make sure the set screws fit into the recesses in the rail. When you find the right location, the mount will move a little forward and backward, but should not slide off.
  • Now, use the proper size Allen wrench and tighten the clamp screws. Snug the two middle screws first, this is important to ensure zero movement. Then snug the two clamp screws located at either end. Make sure all four are tight.
  • Now screw down the two set screws from the top of the mount until they are snug.
  • Your mount base should not be secure.
  • Set your scope into the mount base. Scopes have two turrets (adjustments)—a windage turret and an elevation turret. The windage turret always goes to the right hand side of the rifle.
  • Set your mount caps on top of the scope and start each of the screws. Do not snug them down yet.
  • Adjust your scope's position so that it is centered in the mount from end to end, keeping the turrets in the right location.

Tip: If you have a small level, lay it on a flat part of the rifle, like the front sight. Turn the rifle until it is level. Then do the same thing on the scope. Place the small level on the top turret of the scope and level it. This ensures that your rifle and the scope are on the same horizontal plane.

  • Finally tighten down the mount caps. Be sure to get the gap on either side between the cap and base about the same. Alternate tightening the screws on either side of the cap to keep the gaps the same.

Now you're ready to sight it in. (Watch a video on How to Sight in an Air Rifle Scope >>)

Note: If you decide to go back to iron sights, with the RWS Lock Down Mount, you can remove the mount with the scope still set in the mount, by just loosening the clamp screws, then later reinstall the mount and your scope will still be sighted in. It is not necessary to remove the scope from the mount.
